Hundreds of jobs are up for grabs in Redditch as the town basks in an employment bonanza.

A second Job Centre has had to open in the town to cope with the demand from employers desperately trying to hire people.

It will open in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre at the end of November and will run alongside the existing one in the library.

The second Job Centre will be on the top floor in a unit opposite TK Maxx.

Staff from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said they needed the second centre to hire people for both all year round positions as well as Christmas vacancies.

A spokeswoman for the DWP said: “We have an absolute plethora of vacancies.

“Because of Covid we’ve been limited in the number of people they can see.

Buy a gift for a child in need and make a #BrumWish 2021 come true

BrumWish 2021 aims to get thousands of Christmas gifts to young children in need across our city – the homeless, the vulnerable, kids in care and kids who have little.

This year’s appeal is bigger and better than ever – because we have teamed up with our partners at #Toys4Birmingham, including Thrive Together Birmingham, the Birmingham Playcare Network, the Edgbaston Foundation and Birmingham Forward Steps.

Also involved are Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Barnardo’s, Spurgeon’s children’s charity, the Springfield project in Sparkhill, St Paul’s Community Development Trust and Your Local Pantry, which runs food hubs in 12 locations across Birmingham and the Black Country.

You can buy a gift from the #Brumwish Amazon Wishlist here.

Or you can collect and drop off donations of new and nearly new toys and gifts to special donation days at Edgbaston Stadium, B5 7QU, on Saturday November 27, Friday December 3 and Saturday December 4, from 11am to 3pm, where volunteers will be waiting to see you.

Brand new or nearly new, unwrapped gifts, books and toys for all ages will be accepted.

You can also donate cash, which will go into a fund held by a charity partner to use to plug gaps or buy specialist toys for children with additional needs. This is the link to make a donation.

“Now we have taken on more work coaches and opening more second sites in towns so we can see more people face to face.”

Among the employers currently recruiting in Redditch are Amazon for its new warehouse in the town, Blue Earth Foods, Sigma Call Services and the Prison Service, which is recruiting prison officers.

Redditch people are also being encouraged to apply for jobs with HS2, Worcester Bosch and for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The DWP spokeswoman said there were lots of vacancies in the warehouse sector, as well as hospitality and for care staff.

“We have not had the fall out that we were expecting from furlough ending, not half the number of people we thought, with far more going back to their jobs or quickly finding new positions,” she said.

“It means it’s good for the unemployment figures, but for employers its proving difficult to find people.”
