Who are we looking for?

A paediatric nurse with at least 2 years experience. Experience of diabetes management, tracheostomy and respiratory care, enteral feeding, epilepsy care would be desirable.

A little about the Trust

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust was created in April 2000, by merger of the former East Hertfordshire and North Hertfordshire NHS trusts. It runs Lister Hospital, Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, the New QEII Hospital, Hertford County Hospital, Bedford Dialysis Unit and Harlow Renal Unit.

Pay Rates*:

Days: £19,96 per hour

30 hrs per week during term time. Working days would be 08.30-16.30 for four days Mon-Fri. Amwell View school is a SLD school Nr ware. Successful applicants would have a week local orientation/induction to the school and then would be working alongside another nurse. This is a temp position for approx 2-3 months.

JOB SUMMARY To compassionately lead the special school nursing team at the school you are allocated too. To provide safe, compassionate, evidence based, holistic nursing care to the children and young people who attend the special schools. To provide advice and support to families and education staff. To provide training and competency assessment to education staff. To keep the nurse team manager of the special schools informed of all issues affecting pupils, staff and resources.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical:

1. Work as part of the special school nursing team and be responsible for providing nursing care to children and young people with a variety of different conditions who attend the special schools.

2. Create a compassionate, child friendly atmosphere.

3. Take the lead in establishing excellent standards of care. Delegate to other staff as appropriate.

4. Carry continuing responsibility for the assessment of all pupils care needs. Plan implement and evaluate a holistic programme of care, working independently and within the NMC code of conduct and as a team member.

5. Ensure that account is taken of the child, young persons and families’ customs, values and spiritual beliefs.

6. Demonstrate understanding of complex clinical, emotional and social situations.

7. Be accountable & responsible for the delivery of care taking into account research and evidenced based information.

8. Empower child and family to participate in their care, where possible.

9. To provide expert training and support to school staff and regularly assess skills for delegated tasks. Maintain training and competency records.

10. Ensure compliance with Children’s Services, Trust and local (special school) Policies and Procedures, particularly relating to nursing care and standards.

11. Ensure condition of equipment in use is safe at all times and monitored appropriately, documenting relevant training.

12. Ensure that high standards of Infection prevention and control and evidence based practice are applied to all aspects of care delivery.

13. Promote patient and family involvement and feedback on possible improvements in service delivery.

14. Engage in positive working relationships and communication with education staff and the multi[1]disciplinary team.

15. To liaise directly with health, social and education professionals to ensure the physical, psychological, and social needs of the child are met.

16. Ensure child protection procedures are followed using Hertfordshire Area Child Protection procedures. Complete written reports, attend ICPC’s, core groups and implement agreed actions. Attend supervision.

17. Assist in development and evaluation of new nursing initiatives that are research based.

18. Be aware of and comply with standards laid down in the NMC codes and guidelines.

19. Maintain a duty of care to acknowledge and report incidents and uphold duty of candour

To apply for this post, you will/have:

  • 2 years experience.
  • Experience of diabetes management, tracheostomy and respiratory care, enteral feeding, epilepsy care would be desirable.A minimum of 6 months paid experience in PICU within the last 2 years
  • RN Child / RSCN / LD with specific CYP experience.
  • Mentor preparation
  • Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience*Depending on the Trust, you may require variable additional certification and skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team Good knowledge of health and safety and risk management
  • Experience of staff Leadership
  • Evidence of professional development
  • Experienced Clinical Nurse.
  • Experience of working with children and young people with special needs
  • Experience of teaching others
  • Ability to work well in stressful situations
