Following the successful implementation of an Advanced Nurse Practitioner front line service to patients registered with the Lerwick Health Centre, Shetland’s largest Health Centre with a practice population of approx 9,000, we are seeking to further expand the ANP workforce. This is an exciting time to join the staff of NHS Shetland, where we have vacancies for an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) post to support the ongoing development of the range of patient services which we can provide eg provision of out of hours clinics in evenings and weekends, working in more remote locations to support increased access to services, as well as to enhance choice in relation to the range of healthcare professionals available for consultation. The post holder will work flexibly as part of a team of six ANPs, providing a front line service for general practice patients in various different locations. Support and supervision is available from designated General Practitioners (GP’s).

Advanced Nurse Practitioners will see patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems. Based on patient history, clinical assessment and a comprehensive physical examination, utilising expert knowledge and clinical judgement, the ANP will be able to identify the potential diagnosis. The ANP will be able to initiate laboratory and radiological investigations, make referrals, prescribe and evaluate treatments appropriate to the clinical situation and needs of the patient.

As an experienced nurse with Registration on Part 1 of the NMC Register, you will also possess extensive post registration experience with either a Nurse Practitioner in General Practice Qualification or be expected to have completed / working towards a Masters degree in Advanced Practice which incorporates a programme of Advanced Clinical Examination Skills. Candidates are also expected to possess an Extended Independent (non-medical) Prescribing qualification or be willing to undertake this programme of study. Evidence of ongoing professional development is essential.
